Analyze Stories: Plot (Lines 15-56) Beginning on line 15, the narrator is describing events from the past that brought her family to America. The narrator decides to take the permission slip even though she is sure she will not be allowed to attend the dance. The use of the word nyetand the reference to life in American suggest that she narrator may be an immigrant to the United States. What can you infer about the narrator? The narrator is a student who wants to be able to go to a school dance but thinks it is unlikely she can get permission. Reread lines Analyze what this first paragraph reveals about the narrator. Analysis: Character (Lines 1-14) The narrator is a character in the story, and she begins the story by presenting her thoughts and actions in a particular situation. Setting a Purpose Read Use the question to focus your reading. When Kazakhstan became an independent country in 1991, the government s policies began to favor native Kazakhs, leading many non-natives to immigrate to other countries. These non-native people eventually outnumbered the natives. This particular story lends itself nicely to teaching the elements of a short story plot. I encourage you to read the text (available online). Some activities are optional and can make this a 6- day unit. Students also have the sample as a guide for their writing. Students read and analyze the sample answer before attempting to write. This has proven very effective in my classes. The best part? A sample answer to the Essential Question is provided (on the PowerPoint and student worksheet) so students will understand the concept- and have a model when they respond.
